You've probably heard that cocoa prices have been falling since December 2025, reaching a 60% decrease by mid-2026, but you've probably noticed that your favorite chocolates are getting more expensive as if cocoa prices were actually increasing instead of decreasing.
It's important to consider that there are more ingredients in chocolate production but in this article we will only focus on the cocoa factor since we have heard many times that the explanation for the price increase of a finished product or shortage of the same is due to the increase of a key raw material in its process.
So let's go back a bit to 2024 when its price increased due to a historical hysteria considering factors such as erratic climate patterns, tree age, and long-term investment shortage among some factors, the panic of this to the peak price of more than 11,000 dollars per metric ton with which we arrive at our first consideration if most of the chocolate of 2026 was produced with cocoa at its maximum price in 2024, the prices are not going to decrease for this simple fact so the chocolate brands have to charge the consumer that purchase of cocoa at its highest price but as any worldwide supply chain there are more factors for these global producers, most of them buy in future contracts where not only did they buy cocoa production by months but by upcoming years at a fixed price so it is very likely that the lowest price of cocoa has not yet been used in the purchase contracts.
Considering this, analysts have commented that prices may fall until 2027, clearly in a world where the price of cocoa defined the largest part of the cost of the chocolate bar but we have not yet quantified the energy costs we have had due to geopolitical conflicts which only gives more reasons to companies to reduce or reformulate, since when seeing the price increase, companies not only increased the price but also began to reformulate the recipes, in their perspective was how we can change that expensive cocoa by cheaper alternatives, which has led the products to a new future where the low cocoa price has little probability of reversing this, our most probable future is that we do not see cheaper chocolate but chocolate with less cocoa or in a new premium line much more expensive since the new standard of chocolate has arrived in the market.
